Grigori Sokolov and Alba Evovae had won their little fight. It had been a fight with no meaning, but to describe it as that was to do Fisher and Alba's Eternal Floette a great disservice. The fight had no meaning, but it had meant everything.

Perhaps that was the truth of battle.

"Keiko, they were so strong!" Rex's eyes sparkled as they sat under a grove of trees several miles away from the original fight. Somewhere, Togekiss was perching to recover their strength from the rapid extraction effort they had headed. "That old one was a real warrior. He was like a machine."

Damn. His ribs hurt. Fisher had cracked one at some point. He looked at the courier sitting next to him, with the faint rise and fall of her chest and wounded breath.

"You're hurt." He nudged her gently. "Let me see."

she turned to rex sharply at his request, angry still at the odd reverence he had been influenced by, but she didn't know how else to accuse him. she didn't know what to accuse him of. so she lifted her shirt to show her yellow-blue ribs. the bruises were developing fast, but she might've been lucky enough to avoid anything more than a fracture.[break][break]

"i'm more worried about you. we should keep pushing to oldale. let a professional look at you."[break][break]

dusk hugged them suffocatingly tight. keiko was no fan of the dark. their vulnerability hung over her like a guillotine.

Bruising. Damn. It could've been worse, but it was still an uncomfortable wound. It'd leave her sore for several days, a sensation that Rex found worse than the sharp pains that eventual scarring would bring. Bursts of pain were indications of healing. Bruising and soreness were an inconvenience.

Nor did they look cool when they healed.

"If anything is broken or cracked, I can't do anything about it until we get back into town." Rex frowned and produced a Pokeball unused in the battle. "Unless..."

The Pokeball opened, and from the red haze came a small egg that waddled towards Keiko with baby steps. With a cheerful trill, a soothing water emerged from small fingers towards the bruised area as Togepi prepared a Life Dew. Despite the egg's reliance on Metronome, Rex had taught Togepi a few good tricks.

Hopefully this one would lessen Keiko's burden and keep her in working order.

"Me?" Rex frowned and shook his head. "I'm fine. I think that big guy broke a rib, and my eyesight's messed up from looking directly at that attack. It was strong, but I could've taken it."

rex didn't have the know-how to have a second opinion worth a damn on her injuries, but she sought comfort far more than answers and estimated recovery times, now. she wanted his head in the game - the war game, not the one that appreciated a devastating assault.

And if she had, Keiko would've seen the eyes of a beast, clear and undeterred.

That was the ultimate anomaly of Althus Rex. There was no great ailment afflicting him. He was just defective, attempting to staunch the wound in his soul with blood and fire and rage. It wasn't fair to her. Truthfully, she deserved much better than him. Rex knew it. And yet, he couldn't bear to see her cry.

"If I go out while protecting you, it's a life well lived. I won't cry or complain or bemoan my situation if that's how I go." A bruised finger caressed her cheek. "Living is about what we do, how we go, and how we stand before we fall."

And if he stood on a battlefield, he'd do so with a smile.

"It's why we improve." Rex suddenly tensed. Only then did his pupils dilate into slits, like a beast hunting prey. "Something's coming."

Something was crashing through the underbrush. A great dog, lumbering forward on muscular limbs. Heavy panting filled the air.

keiko's stunned to speechlessness at his certainty - he's so wrong about it all, but she can't find the words to begin to correct him. life was living, and he needed to be less accepting of death. she would make him promise it, but the sudden figure approaching is a higher priority. for now.[break][break]

something of a canine approached rapidly. keiko tucked in closer to rex without realizing it, one arm braced ahead of him as if to hold him back from the beast itself.[break][break]

togekiss summoned a fairy wind to keep it at bay.
